New Plenum!

Postby josiahes on Tue Jul 15, 2008 9:03 pm

I just picked up a C & L plenum for my GT for 85 bucks and was wondering if any of you have experience with this item or stories to make me feel better about my purchase? :P

In my opinion, they're a good choice, good bang for your buck. Don't expect a drastic increase in performance, but there will be an increase, and its worth the money and time to install it.

Installation is actually really easy, and doesn't take long. Don't go too big on the throttle body (if you're changing it out as well). One mistake people do is get the biggest throttle body they can find, and put a 85mm on a stock 4.6. While this doesn't degrade performance as much as putting on an oversized carburetor , it doesn't help performance either. You can save a lot of money by just using the stock TB. If your 4.6 is stock, you won't see increased performance with a 70mm or highter TB. Some claim it "sounds different' but I can't verify that.

I made this same mistake a few years ago on my red stang. I bought a 75mm throttle body, thinking that my cam, heads and intake were enough to warrant a bigger one. Then I found out that to properly utilize a 75mm TB, It would have to be a ported out big block race engine with a power adder to move enough air to require it. My car would probably run exactly the same with the stock one!

Just my food for thought. Throw it on, it will make a difference, I think you'll like the results. Make sure and seal everything up really well.

Thanks for the help man, do you think throttle body spacers are worth the cash?

TB spacers are a hotly debated item. Personally, I don't know enough about physics to really know if they work, I've heard real life testimonies about them, and from what I've heard they work good on trucks, not so much on mustangs.

The theory behind most of them is that they increase airflow and atomize your fuel better. Looking at a mustang intake, especially the 5.0 HO intake, I don't see how they really improve anything. I haven't yet heard of a mustang person who used one and liked it, only guys who used them on trucks. I've never tried them myself.

Personally, instead of dropping 100+ bucks on one, I would instead invest it in some 9mm plug wires. I know it sounds funny, but they really do make a difference in any pony! (Decreased resistance and improved conductivity go a long way).

Thats just my 2 cents, hopefully others will chime in here with their experience.

Throttle body spacer is only going to help after you do some serious engine enhancements, and even then it's minimal at 2-3hp but I found one on my 05 for on 50 so that is a price that is worth it..esp with my plans for the car.
It's just another slow pony, I swear!
