It's hitting the wheel weights, right? How much clearance is needed? If it's pretty close, you could always take a grinder to the caliper. Most of the time they are just pot metal that comes off with a small grinder. I have rounded out the corners and taken a couple millimeters off the top before,and had no problems. I wouldn't suggest removing a half inch off or anything, but mild grinding for clearance wont hurt it. Shoot some black spray paint over it when you're done and it's good to go!
And yes, I've driven drums in front before, that is definitely an adventure! Definitely not fun slowing down from 100+ mph either. (Not that I would ever do something like that on a public highway).
