i hear noises...

Postby josiahes on Thu Apr 03, 2008 5:04 pm

so I got this noise...sounds like a pullie going out, kind rattly, Especially when I rev it and I only notice it after my cars ran for a bit and gets warmed up. so today i pulled over and jumped out to lsiten to it and figured out it's coming from the front passenger side, near the a/c or idler, or maybe in between those two...anyways, i turned on my a/c and it stopped right away, so i revved a few times and no npoise, then i turned it off and listened and the nosie came back so i revved it again and wham, a noise. what could that mean? should i replace my pullies? cuz i dont really have cash for that...i'm just concerned it might be something ruining other things and it sounds gay when I'm rolling through parking lots or at stop lights which is the complete opposite reason I own a mustang :P

That's what I was thinking to but why did my AC have any affect on it?

You're sure you haven't left your recycling under the passenger seat? ;)

Seriously, a friend of my Mom's asked my Dad to look at her car as it was making a noise and it was actually that!!

The AC would have an effect on it because when you turn the AC to the "ON" position, it puts more tension on the belt. Thus causing the rattle to stop...

Any possibility of coolant on the belt? Try adding a few ounces of water to the belt while running and see if the noise goes away. Coolant sounds like a bearing going out. -Shane

I would definitely look at the idler, and possibly change your serpentine belt as well. If it's glazed lightly then it might squeal also. And what shane is saying about the coolant, that has happened to me as well. It has to be something on that belt, so you'll have to narrow it down.

Do you have an air pump still installed on the car? Those have sealed bearings that can go out as well.

I am surprised no one has thought about the clutch on the AC? turns it on and the noise goes away? My bet would be that.
