Replacing Convertible Top

Postby Kitten on Mon Apr 07, 2008 10:43 pm

Years ago, I replaced the cracking top on my own convertible Mustang and went with a canvas. I did tons of research and that seemed to be the best....and I absolutely loved it. Now I have a friend who is about to replace his and he's leaning toward a cloth top. Any advice which way he should head?

I had a 96 gt vert and it needed to have the top replaced very badly. It was canvas and I took it to a shop and had them do the whole thing new window and all and they did a great job and said it should last a good 10-15 years before it started to show signs of wear...I'd say from my experience that it makes the biggest difference what quality the top is and who puts it on for you. I've got the name of the shop that did it for me, I believe thet were in the medford area? adn they did a great job for much cheaper than any pother place I found. If you needed it I'm sure I could look it up for ya!

I don't think cloth would be a good idea especially if the are where you live has snow or rains a lot. I would tell your friend to go with canvas as it is more durable in snow and rain.

I only know one person that attempted to replace a convert top and it was canvas, not on a mustang and a true pain to even fool with. Take it to a shop that knows what their doing and save yourself a headace.

I think he's looking to have his buddy replace it because he owns a local shop that specializes in restoration, so no worries of him doing it himself. I really don't understand why he's wanting to go with cloth so badly anyway.
